10 Funniest Anime Of All Time, Ranked (5)

Anime comedy series are perhaps one of the most common genre of anime outside of action series. Almost every anime series involves some degree of comedy, even when it seems at odds with the general tone of the piece, but fully comedic series are sure to let fans know with their goofy, off-the-wall humor.

Anime comedy series often have shorter episodes, particularly for those based on a different style of comic known as 4koma (4 panel comics) than what most manga are. Many of these 4koma will be brought together to form a single episode storyline. They may or may not have actual continuity, and some anime comedy series even take the form of sketch comedy-style shows. Other anime comedies are written just like their action-oriented counterparts, following a complete storyline from start to finish.

Way of the Househusband follows Tatsu, a former Yakuza leader who now lives his life as a homemaker while his wife works outside the house. Tatsu approaches his everyday tasks like cleaning and cooking with the intensity of a Yakuza member, often speaking euphemistically about his goals in a way that sounds like he's about to get violent, only for that not to be the case at all. The anime is animated in a limited animation style, which actually helps to sell the gags even better than if it were fully animated.

Funny character introductions in anime leave a lasting impression on the audience, setting up or pivoting their expectations of the story to come.

Tatsu occasionally encounters his former associates while out and about, and the outcomes of their faceoffs are impossible to predict. Most of the comedy comes from the mismatch between Tatsu's life and his personality, but at the heart of it, he's still a caring guy who's just trying to get used to his new life.

After a failed attempt at conquering the fantasy land of Ente Isla, Satan is forced to retreat from that world and take up refuge in another world--one which turns out to be modern-day Japan. Trapped in this world without magical powers, Satan takes on the human identity Sadao Maou and begins a new life... working at the counter of the local MgRonald's. The series gets some great fish-out-of-water comedy from this setup as Sadao must acclimate to life on Earth while still trying to find a way back to his previous realm.

A lot of the comedy comes from seeing a powerful figure brought low, but he has an earnest way of trying to regain his power that makes him quickly endearing to the audience. A variety of other characters from his world also show up, each dealing with their new situation in a different and hilarious way.

Spy X Family tells the story of the Forger family, a group assembled by the "father" Loid Forger for the purposes of providing him with cover for his spywork. What he didn't realize is the woman he's married, Yor, is a famed assassin, while the little girl Anya they've adopted is a psychic who can read their minds and knows both of their secrets--but can't let that fact slip, since she wants to keep her own ability secret as well. With so much deception going on, the likelihood of comedic misunderstandings is high.

Spy X Family features a good balance of comedy with some action scenes, while never forgetting that it is first and foremost comedic. The series is hilarious as they each struggle with maintaining their secrets, and Anya's mindset often shapes scenarios to great effect.

Pop Team Epic is a bizarre and surreal comedy series that's structured like a sketch show, with each episode featuring many different bits. It often satirizes what's popular in the world of anime, such as parodies of series like Hikaru no Go and Made in Abyss. It also tends to use a wide variety of media to animate the show, such as flipbooks, felt dolls, traditional animation, CGI, and more, which help to lend a surreal atmosphere to the already strange comedy.

Most bits are structured around the characters of Popuko and Pipimi, and the show has little in the way of continuity to speak of. It's a factory of memes as well, having spawned several with its bizarre shots and panels over the years.

One-Punch Man tells the story of Saitama, a man who's a hero for fun who turns out to be just too darn strong. Nothing is a challenge for Saitama, as he can easily defeat any foe with a single punch. As a result, Saitama is insanely bored with life, and ends up getting sucked into the world of heroes by Genos, one of the few people who knows how powerful Saitama truly is. Saitama is blunt and oblivious, and his actions are often hilarious, as are those of the people around him.

Release Date
January 12, 2019

Kaguya-sama: Love is War is a romantic comedy set in a high school, but it's far from your average high school romance. Set at a high class academy, Kaguya and Miyuki are both stellar students who have the world served up to them on a platter. While both are in love with the other, they're far too proud to be the first to admit this fact, and thus begins a cat-and-mouse mind game to see who can be forced to confess their feelings first. This leads to all manner of absurdly laughable situations, and the comedy is enhanced in the dub by a hilarious voiceover.

✕ Remove Ads

Kaguya-sama takes the Death Note-style mental combat to a new level, while reducing the stakes such that the lengths they go to become utterly ridiculous. It's also just as good as a romance series as it is as a comedy.

FLCL is a classic of Adult Swim, having been run and rerun for years on the channel. FLCL initially follows Naota as he encounters the bizarre and mysterious Haruko, who seems to be an alien from deep space. Haruko brings a new degree of chaos to Naota's life, and he must navigate his coming of age alongside this anarchy to find out just who he is. FLCL went on to have many sequel series, all of which feature Haruko in some way, but often have few returning characters besides her.

Nichijou is an anime that follows the ostensibly "ordinary lives" of its ensemble cast of characters, led by Yuuko and Mio. Featuring all manner of strange things as these girls attend high school, Nichijou has an outlandishly surreal tone to it which packs every episode full to the brim with jokes. While it does tell a continuous story, there are also plenty of aside scenes which exist purely for their comedic value. Aside from classroom problems, the show also deals with robots, scientists, and talking cats, to name just a few.

Nichijou's unhinged swings from the everyday to the fantastical make for hilarious viewing. The show is known for having spawned a variety of memes as well, just like the manga it was based on. The series has an adorable aesthetic that only furthers the comedy, ensuring that Nichijou is the funniest comedy anime out there.
