AS GOOD AS THE NORTHERNERS It was with some interest I read the article on April 14 headed: the men from the North bag the top jobs down I found the gist of the comments from the from to be that Bristolians were "cissy" This I reject immediately and would state that we are as good in every way as they are for working hard etc (even 11 we do sometimes wear suede shoes!) Is it not a fact that once the Northern people get a top job they are followed by a stream of as subordinates? I was discussing this point with a friend who came from the North and her answer was North is a and paradise here in Is this the reason for the emigration? ELSON 9 De Clifford Road Lawrence Weston Bristol Bristow Mat I humbly thank your newspaper for carrying out a great service to its readers each day a service without which many of us would be reduced to the state of nervous twittering wrecks (if we are not so already) I refer of course to that hero of all the downtrodden peoples of the world Tnose of us who incredibly talented as we are cannot summon up the necessary energy to do any work 1 salute that man who who gives us the inspiration to carry on in IAN WOOKEY apprentice with British Aircraft Corporation writes of bis oxporioncos in Jamaica as a member of Voluntary Service Overseas a hostile world I congratulate Bristow on behalf of all his loyal followers REGINALD TILSIT Brooklet Farm Siston Common Warmiey near Bristol WAS given my first troduction to Volim-Service Overseas the apprentice of the British ire raft Corporation to me: how like tf go this Naturally I was curious to what ne was talking bout but by the time he explained and 1 had it over 1 was very in the idea So I filled in the neers-application forms and given an interview in ndon CLIMATE I was accepted by the interviewing body and told to report to Dartford Kent for a training course Anyway before I knew it I had been briefed vaccinated obtained a passport WED and airline tickets and was on my way to Jamaica I arrived in Kingston with another VSO at 10 JO pm after a 14-hour flight and as we stepped off the plane 1 thought the jet engines must still be running because it was unbelievably hot for that hour of the night Fortunately all of Jamaica is not as hot as Kingston and at Cobbla Youth Camp which is where I sm working the dimate is very similar to that of England in summertime rain included At Cobbla we train boys between the ages of 16-21 to be proficient In various trades ranging from tailor it up the night before and teach it the next But fortunately when you have to teach in this manner ou learn fast and before ong I began to feel somewhat competent to deal with the task of teaching 34 boys to become either welders machinists or mechanics within 18 months Just when I was beginning to feel that I could relax a little in the evenings the Camp Director as if by some sixth sense came to my room and asked if I could possibly manage to take a class in the evening As I was sitting there with my feet on my desk I possibly tell him I have the time But if you volunteer you know beforehand that you may be asked to do anything so there is no cause for complaint CONVERSATIONS get the idea that a volunteer's life is all work because some of the more enjoyable days of my life have been spent here in Jamaica I will never forget my first visit to a cinema The film showing was a Western and whenever there was a fist fight on the screen each blow would be followed by shouts of When the hero finally triumphed over his foe there would be one big cry and everyone would jump out of the seats and jump around re-enacting the fight When the action on the screen was slow you would have 50 to 60 different conversations going on around you in a normal tone of voice Jamaica has numerous lc IN STYLE AMBON KNIGHTS: Round tbeWorld Rhythm and Blues Instead of doing impressions of other groups mid singers the Barron Knights do various foreign accents this time on the and those Not hilarious but amusing beaches In fact its coastline is just one beautiful beach where you can get away from it all for a couple of hours NICKNAME You can just lie in the sun and think how good life is or if you feel more energetic you can skin-dive for the numerous varieties of beautiful sea-shells lying just off the beach The biggest single event for me that has occurred since I came to Jamaica was the Graduation Day ceremony in December You see boys who came to camp from their home parishes as mucky change from what their nickname implies into fine young men who would be a credit to any country and there ire no two ways about it you feel proud I know that when my time in Jamaica comes to an end I will take with me many memories and I will leave I hope a good image of Voluntary Service Overseas That little bear is out again Paddington at Large by Michael Bond Fans of Paddington and who under the age of eight i not a fan? will be pleased to know that the little bear is out in paperback form As always the antics of the mischievous Paddington with hi uncanny knack of landing in trouble provide stories to delight young readers This version of Paddington is by Young Puffin and priced at 3s 6d thought about exchanging letters with a pen-friend in France?
