so it was new road Helmet today, the old one was smelling a bit like some old socks, that fell down the washing machine and were left there for a couple of years.

off to the local shop to try on a few helmets, Ive had a good run from HJC so went looking at them, Pinlock pinlock the sale lady were saying. WTF is a pinlock I say. turns out its some anti fog technology, I am sceptical as fk as im ive heard it many times. Well I must say, I am blown away, fitted the pinlock lens to the helmet this evening. kept the visor down , sitting in front of the heater, no fog. not a bit. its like double glazing for your visor.
highly recommended, looking forward to riding with it. the fact it doesnt smell like old socks is a bonus too.

Its probably old tech now, have recently bought a road bike again after a few years just on dirt, but so good I had to share.

They are very awesome. I only recently discovered other helmet brands have them too. Being a devout shoei fan I thought it was an in-house shoei thing. But unlock is a seperate company that sells to other manufacturers.

Never mind eideforever courses ACC should offer discount if you commute regularly and have unlock visor in winter.

Just one tip. If you ever remove for cleaning make sure it is fastidiously dry before reinstalling. Just a couple of trapped droplets will mist between the layers from the radiant heat off your face about a kilometre or so after leaving homes d it’s trapped till you wipe it out.

  3. I have quite a collection of unused Pinlocks for Shoei helmets. I should try one.

Seriously worth it. I've used just about every other product under the sun as did about 5 years of commuting, this would have been next level on those rainy 6:30am rides from Papakura to the Viaduct.

You absolutely should. I rode in the pissing down today for about an hour and again was grateful for not having vision issues. If you ride in heavy rain for a prolonged period the pinlock can get overwhelmed too. At this point it is very hard to dry it out to continue. My experience has been that they seem to be better on fixed full face helmets as opposed to flip fronts. YMMV I guess?

The first time I used a Fog City insert I was so impressed I actually put the sticker on my visor. I think Pinlock came later but eventually I upgraded my Shoei to be compatible and I doubt I would cope without one these days.

The best thing is at night with a pinlock dark visor, in the rain if possible. It's like Wipeout on a PS2.

My two Arais have a pinlock fitted. The last Shoei did too. Been using them for years. The AGV doesn't have one but that is pretty much relegated to display case status. At this stage of my riding career though if I get caught in the rain I've f*cked up.

I was on a ride last year when it absolutely pissed down and one of the guys with a Pinlock had to stop and remove it.

I have a fairly new light smoke visor for the NXR so will try a Pinlock on that.

The main thing is for them to be perfectly fitted. If not, they actually make things worse.
